Becoming a Hair Stylist
You can pursue a career in the beauty industry as a hairdresser. That is, if you have a knack for styling hair and making a living out of it.
The pre-requisites to becoming a hairdresser are simple. First, you need to finish your secondary education and then take either or both two options - finish a trade school program or enter into an apprenticeship. Hairstyling course is offered at several trade schools or specialised colleges. Now, the best part is that a hairstyling program is not as tedious as college education. As a matter of fact, it offers flexible hours so you can fit it in your current schedule. All the basic, and sometimes advance, knowledge and skills in hairdressing can be learned from it. On the other hand, if you have access to an established salon, you can gain hands-on experience there. As an apprentice, you will learn how to use beauty tools like combs, scissors, irons, moose, gels, waxes, etc. Apprenticeship will provide you knowledge on the nitty-gritty of not just hairstyling, but running a beauty salon. It is most advisable to take both options - first, finish a course and second, finish an apprenticeship.
There are other requirements to becoming a hairstylist such as age and license, subject to applicable rules. In some countries, only those 18 years old an above can obtain the necessary education, while others admit those aged 16. License may be required to perform commercial hairstyling. It can be obtained by passing a licensure examination after taking certain courses, including salon management, patron relations, business practices, sanitation and hygiene, razor cuts, and many others.
